Vanda Miss Joaquim

Now known as Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim, this orchid is still widely referred to by its former name. Agnes Joaquim, a Singaporean Armenian, bred Vanda Miss Joaquim, the first hybridized orchid, and was inducted into the Singapore Women's Hall of Fame in 2015.

In 1893, Henry Ridley, then director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens - the only tropical garden honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site - identified it as a hybrid. It first bloomed in Europe in 1897 and was showcased at the Royal Horticultural Show in London, where it earned a First Class Certificate.

In 1981, Vanda Miss Joaquim was officially designated as Singapore's National Flower.
